Instagram Caption Length, Hashtag Limit and the More Cut-Off
Updated
An Instagram caption has a few hard numbers behind it: a character limit, a hashtag limit, and a point where the feed hides the rest of the text. Knowing them saves you from a caption that gets cut mid-word or a hashtag block that silently disappears.
The 2,200 character limit
A caption on a feed post, a Reel or a carousel can hold up to 2,200 characters, spaces and punctuation included. Hashtags count toward that total. If you paste a longer text, the app cuts it at the limit without warning, so the end of a long caption is the first thing to check. Most captions that get read in full are far shorter than the limit; the number is a ceiling, not a target.
Where the more link cuts the text
In the feed Instagram shows roughly the first 125 characters of a caption, about two lines on a phone, and hides the rest behind more. Anything that matters, the point of the post or the question you want answered in the comments, belongs in that first line. The counter under each caption on this site marks where the cut usually falls so you can see it before you paste.
Hashtags and line breaks
A post can carry up to 30 hashtags, in the caption or in the first comment. More than that and Instagram may refuse to publish the post. Line breaks are another trap: the app often collapses empty lines when you paste, which is why many captions arrive as one block. Putting a single dot or an invisible character on the empty line keeps the spacing. The limits above come from Instagram's help pages and can change; check the link below if a number looks off.
